I mean, we won't. You can understand why we won't. Compilations are fully technologically obsolete, since streaming services turn everything into compilations. You no longer need to buy the soundtrack album for some movie that you'll never watch to hear 15 bands that you like and/or tolerate and/or are curious to check out and/or have never heard of. Also, compilations must be an almighty pain in the ass to coordinate. But when a compilation hits right, that's a glorious feeling. When you walk into a record store and you're like, "Wait, they're on it? And her? And these other two people, together?" And then you take it home and all the songs from disparate artists somehow work as a single listening experience? That's the stuff, baby.

Is it somewhat shameful to admit? Sure. No person of taste wants to say they walked away from a Godspeed You! Black Emperor performance. It makes you sound like a rube — perhaps confirms that you are, in fact, a rube. But after about 20 minutes of drone, my festival-brain was growing impatient, wondering about the other set taking place across Union Park. It was the summer of 2012, and the Montreal post-rock legends were headlining Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago. I suspected that soon this extended bout of tension would give way to the kind of transcendent release on which Godspeed built their reputation. In the moment, though, I felt like I had the gist, and my curiosity was gnawing at me. So I went to see a different artist from Montreal.

My seat was uncomfortable. I was hungry. I could see just about every music-biopic cliché coming, and I knew I'd have to get through all of them before I could stretch my legs and find an open burrito spot. But then the picture arrived at the scene where Jeremy Allen White's Bruce Springsteen records "Born In The USA" with the full E Street Band behind him. The film had already shown Springsteen recording that song as a moody acoustic demo. But when those drum-hits and that triumphant keyboard riff came in, the song was transformed, and so was the theater. I forgot all about cramped seats and burritos, and I was transfixed.
